This weekly freely-distributed magazine, founded in June 1968[1] by the eponymous Howard Binford, was available at numerous Fargo-Moorhead grocery stores, restaurants, and other public places during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Howard Binford's Guide provided a calendar, map, and other lists of various entertainment and night-life activities visitors and residents of the F-M area might enjoy.

In May 1986, Binford sold the Guide and his other publishing venture, Pride Magazine, to Kaye's Printing of Fargo[2] after collapsing in a restaurant in 1985 led him to reevaluate his priorities[3]. Binford stayed on as editor and columnist until his death in 1989.

Publishing under this title ceased with the May 1989 issue[4], shortly after Binford's death, but the magazine has continued into the 21st century as Fargo-Moorhead Magazine[5], published by The Fargo Forum.

Staff

In June 1981, Nancy Edmonds Hanson joined the Guide as an associate editor, graduating to full Editor status in 1984. Also at the same time as Hanson's promotion, photographer Russ Hanson was added to the staff. These two changes were due to Binford's age and interest in the future of the magazine with less of his control.[6]

"...locally published magazines containing community information on the Fargo-Moorhead area. The Binford Guide was published by Moorhead resident Howard Binford from 1971 until his death in 1989."
