Advertising blotters are a throwback to the times of slow-drying fountain pens. Blotters were used to absorb excess ink, to avoid dirty fingers. Ones with advertising have a hard side, printed with the marketing message, and a layer of blotter paper or cotton on the back. In ephemera terms, they were used a lot, and rarely saved. I've got a few in my collection.
